Step 1 of 3: Equipment

Sizing a furnace for a Newton County home is not a job a contractor can do from a catalog default. Homes in Newton County, AR run heat about seven months a year, from October through April. The burner and heat exchanger are carrying that load month after month, cycling on and off against the cold, and a unit that falls short of what the house actually needs will run harder and longer to compensate. That extra strain accumulates in the ignition system and the heat exchanger first. A contractor quoting a replacement here has to establish what the existing unit was asked to do, because an undersized install reveals itself in the components that bore the most work.

Ductwork in a house tells a contractor more about a furnace installation than the furnace itself does. Half the homes in Newton County, Arkansas were built in 1983 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). That means a substantial share of the housing stock was ducted for systems that have since been replaced at least once, and the ducts themselves were sized and routed for whatever came first, not for what a contractor is putting in now. A new furnace draws air and distributes heat according to its own load calculations, and ducts that were never matched to it become the constraint the job has to work around before anything else can be priced.

What a Furnace Installation Covers

Isometric cutaway illustration of a single-story house with a dark shingled roof, showing interior rooms with beds and furniture, overhead ductwork, and a gray furnace with a tall flue pipe at the exterior wall.

The furnace itself sits in a mechanical room, basement, or utility closet and is the central piece of the installation. A contractor sets the unit in place, connects it to the fuel supply, and ties it into the existing duct openings. The flue or venting pipe runs from the furnace to the exterior and carries combustion exhaust out of the house.

The thermostat mounts on an interior wall and is the control point for the whole system. A new furnace install also brings a new air filter housing into the return air path, and the contractor connects the blower side to whatever plenum feeds the supply ducts. Each of these connection points gets set during the same visit.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines what applies to your specific home.

Severe Weather Events in Newton County

Newton County's climate puts real demands on heating equipment, and those demands compound over time with every weather event a system has to absorb. A furnace sized and installed for local conditions handles that load differently than one that was not.
